Book Corner: Monstersaurus

22 March 2016

My book corner choice this month is: Monstersaurus by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort.

You may have read other books from this popular pairing as they are responsible for Aliens love underpants and Dinosaurs love underpants, both of which are favourites in our house. When I spotted Monstersaurus on offer in the supermarket I couldn't resist. The RRP is £5.99 but we picked it up as part of a special offer.

Monstersaurus is a scientific tale about a boy called Monty who loves inventing. But the problem is that his inventions don't always work. One day Monty finds an instruction manual and he begins to make a monster friend. The invention requires some pretty spectacular ingredients that your kids will love to errr over.

The illustrations are fabulous with loads of green slime and fizzing mess to please our little monsters. They can also guess what kind of monster will appear from Monty's formula. The story is written in rhyming couplets so there is plenty of opportunity for joining in with the tale and it uses some great sound words for your little linguists to explore onematepoia.

Monty manages to make a monster friend (or three) but of course it doesn't go quite according to plan. Will he be gobbled up by a monster, a big, hairy and scary one?

I love the ending of the story as it is left open for us to decide what might happen next. You could get your kids to draw the next part or act it out. Great for little imaginations!

The message behind the story is also really special as Monstersaurus surprises us all by acting as you might not have expected. Teaching us that appearances can be deceptive. I love books that also give a valuable lesson.

I can see this one becoming a firm favourite at bedtime. I would recommend this for young readers, or for nursery teachers to share with their class.

Another classic from Freedman and Cort.
