Farewell Pa

30 April 2018

Dear friends,

Even if you know what is coming, you are never prepared for how it feels...

Pa welcomed me into his family with open arms. We did not share a language but we had a shared love for his son. In those early days I’d feel him watching out for  me at family gatherings and when I turned to look he’d give me a broad smile. He always made me feel safe and at home even without words.

Nothing was ever too much for Pa. He was my saviour many times; car accidents, hospital emergencies, airport runs and even holding my hand as I went into labour. His calm and easy manner made him the perfect companion for a scared English woman in The Netherlands.

Pa was happiest and most content with the boys; sitting them on his shoulders to see Sinterklaas arrive, waiting at the school gate, playing games at the table or just watching TV.

He never said no but was always there when I needed help.

You can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals. All the dogs in the family adored him too. He cared for us all.

I loved Pa’s cheeky side, he never gave me three cheek kisses but always snuck the last one on my lips with a twinkle in his eye.

We were immensely lucky to have him in our lives. He leaves a massive hole that will never be filled. I wish I had told him more often how much he meant to me and how grateful I was to have him as my father-in-law.

I shall remember him fondly, enjoying the afternoon sunshine in our garden with Nova at his side and the newspaper on his knee.

Spend time with those you love. One of these days you will either say, I wish I had or I'm glad I did...

I will be back next week with pointshoot. Thank you all for your kind messages.
