I believe in you!

25 October 2017

Dear Son,

You are having a hard time lately and it is breaking my heart. I can feel the anxiety invading your thoughts, hear it in your quivering voice and see it in your nervous, stilted reactions to questions and the tears pricking your eyes.

Changes are coming... a new teacher and an impending move to secondary school. I understand that all this talk of change has thrown you. You do not deal in uncertainty. Your currency is timetables, clear schedules and rules.

But son life isn’t always clear. Life is full of twists and turns and sometimes it is the unexpected and unplanned that ends up being the best thing that ever happened to you.

Mummy never expected to end up in Holland but here I am and now I have you, the best thing that ever happened to me.

Know that I will always try my hardest to lead you through whatever comes your way. But I don’t always have all the answers...

Twice in the last month you have asked me why people behave in a certain way. Twice you have had unkind words spat at you that have left you devastated, confused, heartbroken, angry.

I want you to know that it is not you! You are not a weirdo with no friends. You are not naughty or stupid or ... anything else these thoughtless people choose to throw at you!

You can not change other people’s behaviour but you can change your reaction to it!

Keep calm, stay strong and walk away. Always remember to talk. Tell me or another adult you trust!

Don’t ever let anyone else tell you who or what you are! You know your true worth...

Stand tall son. Do not take the weight of other people's words on your shoulders.

Never forget how special you are. You inspire me every single day to be a better person through your perseverance, positive attitude and unconditional love.

Always remember, I believe in you!

Your Imperfect Mum
