Point Shoot: Liberation day 2018

7 May 2018

Dear friends,

This weekend we celebrated Liberation day.

On May 4 the Dutch hold their Remembrance Day (Dodenherdenking). There are remembrance gatherings all over Holland, the better-known at the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam and at the Waalsdorpervlakte in the dunes near The Hague, one of the infamous Nazi execution places. Throughout the country two minutes of silence is observed at 8 pm.

In Holland, Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag) is celebrated on May the 5th to mark the end of the occupation by Nazi Germany during World War II.

On 5 May 1945 the Canadian General Charles Foulkesand the German Commander-in-Chief Johannes Blaskowitz reached an agreement on the surrender of German forces in the Netherlands in Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen.

In Rijnsburg this year there was a special parade.

Now over to my Photo diary...

2 very short videos of the parade...

I think it is very important that we educate our children about their History. We should never forget the sacrifices that these brave men and women made for us to live freely.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Liberation day 2015...
